Class Description

4-6 Boys Adventures in Literature

$90/student, books not provided

Boys Adventures in Literature combines robust book discussion and examination of the art of literature with hands-on learning to immerse boys in the world of the story. This lively approach works well both for advanced readers and for reluctant readers who need something to engage them. We will explore a variety of literary styles including both classics and modern novels. Most of the stories have a male main character who has to face and overcome an obstacle with virtue and personal growth.

We will read:

WEEK 1
Poetry Week! [nothing to purchase]
*Exploring poetic styles and ways of manipulating language for effect. Learning to see poetic
elements in prose.

WEEKS 2-4
The Cay by Theodore Taylor [Genre: survival, seafaring]

WEEKS 5-7
The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster [Genre: fantasy]

WEEKS 8-10
The Trumpeter of Krakow by Eric P. Kelly [Genre: historical fiction, classic, Newbery
medal]

WEEKS 11-13
A Place to Hang the Moon by Kate Albus [Genre: historical fiction, modern]

We would do most books on a 3 week cycle:

(1) Intro to the book, context, themes, and literary devices to look for

(2) Hands on learning experience connected with what we have read so far

(3) Discuss the book!

The only required homework will be to read or listen to the book in a timely manner. There will not be tests or a writing component to this enrichment class, but I can send suggestions to parents who would like to add elements at home to make it a complete literature program. The class will be offered fall and spring with new material in the spring that builds upon the skills learned in the fall. You will need to obtain the books on your own, but most of them can be borrowed through the library system or purchased inexpensively through used book sources.
