Course Description and Objectives: NC History is a year-long academic course with hands-on and interactive activities. Students will study topics of North Carolina’s geography, past & present history, government & economics, flora & fauna, and cultural & social developments. Students will create a North Carolina Notebook, which will become a real treasure. Activities in and outside of class will include researching, mapping, current events, writing reports, oral presentations, art projects, games, and food. Upon completion of this journey, students will have gained historical and cultural perspective of the men, women, and events that formed our state as well as a one-of-a-kind North Carolina book full of everything they have learned throughout the year.
● America the Beautiful North Carolina series, Revised Edition (2014) by Scholastic. (Amazon new or used)
● 1 ½ - 2 inch, 3-ring binder of any color with a plastic sleeve cover. *This will be their NC Notebook keepsake so please buy the notebook NEW.
● 1-2 packs of 50 or more plastic sheet protectors for their binder
● Art box/bag including colored pencils/regular pencils, 2 black ultra fine point markers/pens, double sided tape and/or glue stick, scissors. Homework: Weekly homework assignments will be emailed each Thursday as an interactive, printable page written to the student that will enable students and parents to follow easily. Weekly assignments are scheduled for three days of learning with extra optional activities available. On each homework page, links to videos, virtual field trips, pictures, articles, etc. are provided for the students. Access to a computer or ipad to click on the provided links is a must. Students are learning to follow a schedule while in this class, learning organizational skills, and practicing time management.. all while studying our state! Activities and discussion in class are dependent on completed homework assignments.
Special Requirements: Parents will need to review the weekly homework sheet with their child each week and help with navigating the internet as needed. Students may need assistance with writing reports or gathering supplies for projects.
Grading: Notebooks will be assessed on completeness, effort, organization, and neatness. Mid and end of semester progress reports will be sent to parents throughout the year.
