# Class Description

**This course builds on algebra 2 concepts and strengthens understanding of geometry. It will prepare students to succeed in a calculus course, which is necessary to succeed in physics, chemistry, and other mathematically based studies.**

**Prerequisites:**

**Students should have completed a course in algebra 2 before attempting this class. A course in**

**geometry would be helpful but is not required.**

**Textbook Title: Saxon Advanced Mathematics**

**Textbook edition: 2nd edition 1998**

**Textbook ISBN: 978-1-56577-039-3**

**Homework Required? YES!! Mastery of mathematics requires extensive problem solving and review,**

**which is the primary strength of Saxon math texts.**

**Students will need to read the lessons before class and attempt all the problems so that they will “know**

**what they do not know”.**

**Materials required: A calculator will be helpful.**

**The solutions manual is not required, but can be very helpful. It should only be used when the student is**

**completely stumped.**

**Other notes:**

**This course is designed to be finished in 2-4 semesters, depending on student strength. Finishing in 2 semesters requires covering 4 lessons per week. Slowing to 3 lessons per week would finish in 3**

**semesters. I am preparing for strong students, in a small class size, and expect to finish in 2 semesters.**

**We can adjust class speed if necessary.**

**There will be a test after every four lessons. In order to make the best use of our time, tests will be**

**completed at home and brought to the next class.**

**Most of our class time will involve answering student questions and reviewing test questions, with a little**

**time to look ahead to the next section.**
