In order to be successful in this class, students must have completed Algebra 1. This class is designed to be a first-year high school chemistry course, and provides students with a strong foundation in preparation for a college-level course. The course covers units, significant figures, atomic theory, ionic and covalent compounds, physical and chemical changes, stoichiometry, molarity and molality, gas laws, acids and bases, reduction and oxidation, thermodynamics and kinetics. Students will also learn how to write a lab report without using a template.
Class time will be a combination of discussion, instruction, and experiments. Tests will be administered and graded at home by parents with scores being reported to me. Grades will be compromised of test scores (50%), lab reports (30%), and other assignments including, but not limited to, in-class knowledge checks and applications in chemistry assignments (20%).
My goal is for students to understand practical applications of chemistry while preparing them for the expectations of a college level chemistry course.
