Class Description

This class covers traditional second-year algebra plus geometric concepts and introduction to proof outlines preparing the student for Advanced Math. Completing this year-long course earns one semester of geometry credit (the second semester of geometry credit is earned after successful completion of Saxon Advanced Math). This course includes applications to physics, chemistry, probability, and statistics. A scientific calculator is required when the trigonometry lessons begin. Until then no calculator usage is allowed. (A graphing calculator may be used, but the text does not provide information on the key sequencing so students must be adept at using their calculators of choice.) Class time will be spent on the presentation of new material (approximately four to six lessons per week) and answering homework questions as time permits. Parents will pre-grade homework so that the student has an opportunity to self-correct before coming to class with questions. On occasion, homework will be collected and graded by the instructor. There will be weekly in-class quizzes and an occasional take-home test. This course is taught at an honors level. Please be sure your student is ready for the rigors of an honors course (e.g. heavy on theory, the use of outside resources and assignments provided by the instructor, weekly testing, a brisk pace, and a seven-point grading scale). Parents are not required to know the subject matter, but must facilitate the learning of the subject during the week such as checking that assignments are completed, pre-grading assignments, securing tutoring help if needed so that the student does not fall behind, checking comments on graded work when returned to the student, signing progress reports (three per semester), etc.
